Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Team SoundProof

The so-called "Western diet" that is high in red meat and animal fats and low in fibre, fruits and vegetables is linked to increased risk of obesity, heart disease and certain cancers. However, it is unknown whether it is the animal fats themselves that are the problem, or the way the red meat may be cooked. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

http://ca.movember.com/mospace/64852 (Peter Brouwer and Barrie Fire Team)

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Lizzie Vickery & Talia Shipman

Research suggests that fat increases creation of the hormone testosterone, which may help prostate cancer cells grow. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Chris Vassalos

Foods rich in saturated fats have been associated with increased risk of prostate cancer, possibly because they are metabolized into testosterone. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Methew Cheung

The risk of prostate cancer in Asian men is five times higher in North America than in Asia: one possible reason is the high-fat North American diet. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Jes Smith & Robyn Letson

The risk of developing prostate cancer increases with age. It is very rare (although possible) to be diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 40, but a man’s risk increases quickly after age 50. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Jennifer Fukushima

Not all men progress through all phases. In some cases, the cancer grows so slowly it remains confined to the prostate until the end of the man's life. Other men have their localized cancer completely eliminated with treatments such as surgery or radiation. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Marco Avolio

There are differences of opinion about at what point more treatment should be started once PSA levels start to rise. In deciding when to re-start therapy, men and their doctors can also consider the PSA doubling time and the results of a bone scan. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Vanessa Heins

The best way to monitor for recurrence of prostate cancer is to test PSA levels regularly. Some doctors recommend testing more often, but in general all agree that PSA levels should be tested every year. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Peter Harte

After therapy, there is always a chance the cancer will return, often because cancer cells escaped from the prostate before treatment began. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

http://ca.movember.com/mospace/64852 (Peter Brouwer and Barrie Fire Team)

Pictured: Peter was really happy to have this moustache in time for Halloween this year. He went as a bee, so naturally he wanted to have a full grown mo'. Thank you Peter for ripping off your blinds and moving them across your apartment for this.

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Finn O'Hara

Canadian research suggests that watchful waiting is low risk; most men who choose to start treatment after a period of watchful waiting respond well to therapy. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

http://ca.movember.com/mospace/64852 (Peter Brouwer and Barrie Fire Team)

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Matt & Jacqui Cannata

When men with other conditions such as severe heart or lung disease, other types of cancer, or men in their 80s or 90s, are diagnosed with prostate cancer, although treatment is technically possible, many doctors will suggest putting it off because treatments can cause more problems than the disease itself. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

To donate:
http://ca.movember.com/mospace/133979/ (Steve Hagey)
http://ca.movember.com/mospace/64852 (Peter Brouwer and Barrie Fire Team)

Pictured: I shot Matt and Jacqui's wedding a little over a year ago, which was surreal enough as they are the first of my friends to get married. For this shoot, the pair sit in front of their bookcases in their new home after offering me some of their homemade beer. They're all grown up.

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Wayne Shipley

Your doctor may suggest treatments like surgery or radiation if your tumour starts to grow and spread. If your prostate biopsy confirms a small volume tumour (Stage 1), which is low-grade, watchful waiting may be right for you.

http://ca.movember.com/mospace/64852 (Peter Brouwer and Barrie Fire Team)

Pictured: Wayne and I had a brief discussion about Halloween in his office where he manages Spiritlive, a Ryerson radio station. He went as Ned Flanders one year. Amazing.

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Florence Lam & Peter Brouwer

In general, only men with low-stage and low-grade tumours should consider watchful waiting. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Craig Barretto

Prostate cancer tends to be a slow growing disease and treatments do have side effects. Therefore, in some cases, it may be reasonable and safe to wait and carefully monitor the cancer’s progress before deciding to start treatment. This process is called “watchful waiting”.  (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

To donate:

Pictured: Craig stands next to one of his favourite things - his faithful car. Craig is a sport for standing out in the cold for this, and for sporting that giant moustache.

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Stephanie Cloutier

Patients who undergo radical prostatectomy generally live longer. The expected 15-year survival for patients with localized prostate cancer is about 80% following radical prostatectomy, 65% following radiation, and 50 to 60% with watchful waiting. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Steve & Rowan Hagey

Radical prostatectomy (surgery) is the "gold standard" for treatment of localized disease. In patients with early disease, the likelihood of cure is as high as 97%. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

To donate:

Pictured: This is Steve's moustache progress on day 5 of Movember giving son, Rowan a shaving lesson. Look closely, a handlebar moustache is slowly coming in (on Steve not Rowan). Above is a link to Steve's Movember donation page which will remain on the blog until the end of the month.

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute - Kimon Kaketsi

The best-case scenario is that prostate cancer is detected early in the disease process, when it is confined to the prostate gland. At this stage there are several treatment options that may completely eliminate the cancer. These include various forms of surgery and radiation, which have cure rates as high as 95% or better. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

Pictured: Kimon sits here in a chest he found at a second hand store that doubles as his coffee table. It had a strong musty smell when we opened it, which is why the window is opened. Thanks Kimon for sitting in it anyway.

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute: Milan Julius Schramek

Prostate cancer is going to be diagnosed in about 25,500 men this year, not including cases that go undiagnosed due to men's unwillingness to go for annual check-ups. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

To donate:  http://ca.movember.com/donate/

Pictured: Milan made the mistake of introducing this pose in the middle of our shoot. He had to sit like that for the next twenty minutes before switching to the other arm...and then coming back to this arm for the final shot.

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute: Preston Wilson & Joyce Mosby

During the early stages of prostate cancer there are few symptoms. In fact, many men in the early stages of prostate cancer have no symptoms at all. Without regular testing it is very difficult to find early stage prostate cancer. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

To donate: http://ca.movember.com/donate/

Pictured: My very helpful models for the day, Preston and Joyce, graciously allowed me to photograph them in these moustaches after a long day of shooting we did for Still Life. Thank you both for your patience.

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute: Valery Gore

In the early stages, when the cancer cells are only in the prostate, the disease is very curable (cure rates of 95% or better) with surgery or radiation. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)

To donate: http://ca.movember.com/donate/

Pictured: Valery suggested wearing this hockey blouse to compliment her moustache. I think it's a good fit.

Moustache Mayhem, A Movember Tribute: Deaglan Kernohan-Wallingford

This series started in the summer just for fun actually and had no real purpose except to showcase hilarious moustaches. The other week I decided to round up thirty people to photograph in moustaches - both fake AND homegrown - to celebrate the moustache form and to pay tribute to Movember. One will go up each day of this month, so keep checking back!

The most common cancer among Canadian men - [prostate cancer] will afflict 1 in 6 men and is a greater threat for those with a family history of the disease. (From Prostate Cancer Canada)
